When it was announced that Carrie Fisher would appear in Star Wars: Episode IX as Leia fans were surprised and excited! It's certainly something I wasn't expecting. It was already reported that she will be brought back thanks to unused footage that was shot for both The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. I'm really curious to see how that footage will end up being implemented in Episode IX and how footage from two separate films will fit into the story that Episode IX will tell.
Carrie Fisher's brother Todd is incredibly happy about the fact that his sister will be included in the final film in the Saga. He explains that it's "important to us all" that she is being included. During an interview with ET Canada, he said:
"My sister and Princess Leia are the same thing. And the idea of that story stopping and her not carrying forward is very disturbing to me. It’s just awesome that it worked out this way, and thanks to J.J. Abrams, it’s just going to be, I’m sure, very magical and important to us all."
Early on in the development process, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said that Carrie Fisher wouldn’t appear in the film. But, Todd says that even though it wasn’t easy, they figured out a way to make it work:
"They arranged it – the script and what was shot – to bring her into the story in a way as if they had filmed it yesterday. Isn’t that magical? That the things she shot a few years ago are frozen in time so to speak, and then they’ve been reborn into the final Star Wars where she is truly the character that needed to continue."
When expanding on his feelings toward the whole thing, he said:
"We are sensitive to how things are done and why they are done. This is one that you have got to embrace with a big hug."
Star Wars: Episode 9 hits theaters on December 20, 2019.
