Warner Bros. and director Cathy Yan are starting to narrow down the casting for the lead roles in the DC film Birds of Prey. Margot Robbie is reprising her role as Harley Quinn, and according to both THR and Deadline, the current frontrunners for Huntress, Black Canary, and Renee Montoya include the following:
Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane), Margaret Qualley (The Leftovers), Cristin Milioti (Black Mirror, How I Met Your Mother), and Sofia Boutella (The Mummy) are up for the role of Huntress.
Gugu Mbatha-Raw (The Cloverfield Paradox) and Jurnee Smollett-Bell (Undergroud) have read for Black Canary.
Then there’s Justina Machado (Six Feet Under) and Roberta Colindrez (I Love Dick), who are being looked at for Renee Montoya.
The reports also have confirmed that Cassie Cain a.k.a. Batgirl will also be on the team and that Black Mask will be the main villain.
The movie is also being developed by writer Christina Hodson (Bumblebee) and it's being developed as an R-rated film that Robbie previously described as a "girl gang film". She explained;
"I pitched the idea of an R-rated girl gang film including Harley, because I was like, ‘Harley needs friends.’ Harley loves interacting with people, so don’t ever make her do a standalone film. She’s got to be with other people, it should be a girl gang. I wasn’t seeing enough girl gangs on screen, especially in the action space. So that was always a big part of it."
This is also the rumored plot synopsis that found its way online:
After splitting up with The Joker, Harley Quinn and three other female superheroes – Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya – come together to save the life of a little girl (Cassandra Cain) from an evil crime lord."
And here's some information on the characters the the studio is currently casting:
Black Canary, aka Dinah Laurel, is a fantastic hand-to-hand combatant who comes from a family of crime fighters. Her father, Larry Lance, was a police officer, while her mother (also named Dinah) was the original Black Canary.
Helena Bertinelli, aka Huntress, is a vigilante operating out of Gotham City.
Cassandra Cain is one of the world’s greatest martial artists, and also a vigilante who becomes Batgirl.
Renee Montoya is a detective working for the Gotham City Police Department. Montoya is openly lesbian, and during The New 52 comics she takes on a costumed identity, becoming the Question.
Some of the other actresses that were reportedly up for some of these roles included Vanessa Kirby, Alexandra Daddario, Lady Gaga, and Blake Lively.
Which of these new list of actresses would you like to see cast in these roles?
